A young woman and mother of three was shot and killed in her home in the Galilee city of Maghar on Thursday.

The case is being treated as a murder investigation. Police said Rasha Sitawi, 32, was at home with her 12-year-old daughter when the shooting occurred.

Neighbors said they heard the gunshots and called police, who began searching for suspects.

Mayor Farid Ghanaim said Sitawi had gotten divorced about a year ago and lived with her children in her father’s home.

“We were astounded by the news,” said Sitawi’s uncle, Tawfik. “What she mainly did was raise her children and earn an honorable living. We don’t know the circumstances of this shocking act. We’re waiting for the police to complete their investigation.”

According to the Abraham Initiatives, 15 Arab women have been murdered in Israel this year. Earlier this week a 55-year-old woman was murdered in Jadeidi-Makr. Her husband was arrested and sent for a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial.

Also on Thursday, hundreds of women marched in Tel Aviv to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
